Infantino Confirms Iran Will Participate in the World Cup Despite Ongoing War
FIFA insists on inclusion as qualification stands, even amid geopolitical tensions and security concerns

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that Iran’s national team will take part in the upcoming World Cup despite the ongoing war with the United States and earlier uncertainty about its participation. The decision underscores the principle of sporting qualification rights (حقوق صعود ورزشی) [hoquq-e so'ud-e varzeshi], as Iran had already secured its place through competition. The announcement, reported by the Associated Press, highlights FIFA’s commitment to maintaining tournament integrity regardless of external circumstances.
Infantino emphasized that Iran’s participation is non-negotiable, stating, "The Iranian team will definitely come, yes. We hope that by then the situation, of course, will be peaceful. But Iran must come. They represent their people. The players want to play". His remarks reflect the importance of national representation in sport (نمایندگی ملی در ورزش) [namāyandegi-ye melli dar varzesh], where teams symbolize their populations beyond political contexts.
The FIFA president also addressed the broader relationship between sports and global affairs, acknowledging the challenges of separating the two. He noted, "We don't live on the Moon, we live on planet Earth. But if no one builds bridges, then no one will". This perspective highlights the role of sport as a tool for international cooperation (همکاری بینالمللی) [hamkāri-ye beyn-ol-melali] and dialogue, even during periods of conflict.
The tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, is expected to include Iran in the group stage matches scheduled in California and Seattle. This arrangement reflects ongoing efforts to ensure event organization continuity (تداوم برگزاری رویداد) [tadāvom-e bargozāri-ye ruidad], despite geopolitical instability. Hosting matches involving a nation engaged in conflict also raises complex logistical and security considerations.
Earlier concerns had been raised about whether Iran would be allowed to compete due to safety risks and political tensions. However, FIFA has maintained its position that sporting competitions should remain inclusive, reinforcing the principle of sports neutrality (بیطرفی ورزشی) [bi-tarafi-ye varzeshi]. This stance aligns with longstanding efforts by international sporting bodies to avoid political interference in tournaments.
Infantino also mentioned that he had personally visited the Iranian national team and was impressed by their level of performance. This acknowledgment highlights the importance of athletic performance standards (استانداردهای عملکرد ورزشی) [estāndārd-hā-ye amal-kard-e varzeshi], which remain a key factor in participation decisions. Regardless of external circumstances, teams are evaluated based on merit and competitive achievement.
The decision comes after earlier reports suggested that Iran might withdraw from the 2026 World Cup due to the war. Despite these claims, FIFA’s confirmation clarifies that no such withdrawal has been finalized, reinforcing the organization’s authority over tournament eligibility rules (قوانین واجد شرایط بودن مسابقات) [ghavānin-e vājed sharāyet budan-e mosābeghāt].
Beyond the immediate situation, the inclusion of Iran highlights the broader tension between global events and international sport. Major tournaments often take place against complex political backdrops, requiring governing bodies to balance fairness, safety, and global representation. This dynamic illustrates the enduring relevance of global sporting governance (حکمرانی جهانی ورزش) [hokmrāni-ye jahāni-ye varzesh] in navigating such challenges.
Historically, international competitions have continued even during periods of conflict, serving as platforms for unity and symbolic engagement. FIFA’s decision reflects this tradition, suggesting that sport can function as a bridge in divided times, even when political realities remain unresolved.
