Shadow Fleet, Zombie IDs: How Iranian Ships Are Dodging Trump’s Hormuz Blockade
Iran-linked vessels adopt covert maritime tactics to bypass US naval pressure in a critical global shipping corridor

Soon after the United States announced a maritime blockade of Iranian ports around the Strait of Hormuz, vessels connected to Iran began navigating through the American military presence in the Persian Gulf. These ships are increasingly using covert navigation techniques (تکنیکهای ناوبری پنهان) [teknīk-hā-ye nāvbari-ye penhān], including turning off tracking systems and manipulating their identities. The strategy closely resembles the shadow fleet operations (عملیات ناوگان سایه) [amaliyāt-e nāvgān-e sāye] previously associated with Russia, allowing ships to evade surveillance and continue operations despite restrictions.
Following the breakdown of diplomatic talks between the US and Iran in Islamabad, US President Donald Trump ordered a naval blockade targeting one of the world’s most vital energy transit points. The aim was to disrupt Iran’s oil and gas exports and weaken its control over the strategic maritime corridor (گذرگاه دریایی راهبردی) [gozargāh-e daryāyī rāhbord̄ī]. The Strait of Hormuz is responsible for transporting roughly one-fifth of global oil consumption, making it a crucial chokepoint in international trade. However, despite the deployment of more than 10,000 US personnel, including Marines and airmen, early signs suggest that the blockade is facing operational challenges.
According to shipping data cited by Reuters, at least eight vessels, including three tankers linked to Iran, successfully crossed the strait after the blockade was enforced. This highlights the limitations of traditional enforcement methods against increasingly sophisticated maritime evasion tactics (تاکتیکهای فرار دریایی) [tāktik-hā-ye farār daryāyī]. Analysts note that ships are exploiting gaps in monitoring systems, using methods such as disabling Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), which normally transmit a vessel’s location and identity.
One of the most notable techniques involves the use of so-called zombie ship identities (هویتهای کشتی زامبی) [hoviyat-hā-ye keshti-ye zāmbī]. In this method, vessels assume the identity of decommissioned or inactive ships, making it difficult for authorities to track their movements accurately. By reusing legitimate but dormant identifiers, these ships blend into global shipping data, complicating detection efforts and allowing them to bypass sanctions enforcement mechanisms.
In addition to identity spoofing, Iran-linked ships are reported to engage in dark activity at sea (فعالیت تاریک در دریا) [fa‘āliyat-e tārik dar daryā], which includes turning off transponders and avoiding heavily monitored routes. This behavior reduces visibility to international tracking systems and creates significant challenges for naval forces attempting to enforce blockades. Similar practices have been documented in sanctioned oil trades involving countries like North Korea and Venezuela, indicating a broader trend in sanction evasion.
The situation underscores the evolving nature of maritime conflict, where digital manipulation and logistical ingenuity are becoming as important as physical military presence. Experts argue that enforcing a blockade in such a heavily trafficked and economically critical waterway requires more advanced surveillance and international coordination. Without addressing these technological loopholes, even a large-scale military deployment may struggle to fully control the flow of goods.
