Will the Iran War Push Millions Back Into Poverty?
Rising costs and economic disruption threaten vulnerable populations worldwide

The United States-Israel war on Iran is having far-reaching economic consequences, extending well beyond the Middle East. Increasing fuel costs (هزینه سوخت) [hazine-ye sukht] and disruptions to supply chains are making essential goods more expensive and harder to access. As a result, households in multiple regions are facing growing financial strain, with basic necessities becoming less affordable.
One of the most immediate impacts is on food availability and pricing. As transportation and production costs rise, food systems are under pressure, leading to reduced access and higher prices. This situation reflects a broader crisis in food security (امنیت غذایی) [amniyat-e ghazāyi], particularly in countries that rely heavily on imported goods. For many families, the combination of rising costs and limited supply is creating serious challenges in meeting daily needs.
Economic disruptions are also affecting employment and income. Businesses are struggling with increased operational costs and reduced demand, leading to job losses in various sectors. This trend contributes to rising unemployment rates (نرخ بیکاری) [nerkh-e bikāri], further weakening already fragile economies and limiting opportunities for recovery.
Another key factor is the decline in remittances, which serve as a crucial source of income for millions of households in developing regions. As global economic conditions worsen, workers abroad are sending less money home, reducing financial support for families. This decline in remittance flows (جریان حوالهها) [jaryān-e havāleh-hā] adds to the financial pressure faced by vulnerable populations.
Countries in the Global South are particularly exposed to these challenges due to their dependence on imports, especially energy and food supplies from the Gulf region. Disruptions in trade routes and rising costs are placing additional strain on national economies. This highlights the broader issue of economic vulnerability (آسیبپذیری اقتصادی) [āsib-paziri-ye eghtesādi], where external shocks can quickly translate into domestic crises.
The United Nations has warned that these combined effects could push up to 32.5 million people back into poverty. This projection underscores the scale of the crisis and the potential reversal of progress made in recent years. The risk of increasing global poverty (فقر جهانی) [faqr-e jahāni] is a major concern for policymakers and international organizations.
Many of the affected economies were already facing difficulties before the conflict, including high debt levels, inflation, and limited fiscal capacity. The additional burden of rising costs and reduced trade is intensifying these challenges, making recovery more difficult. Governments are now struggling to manage economic instability (بیثباتی اقتصادی) [bi-sabāti-ye eghtesādi] while attempting to protect their populations.
At the same time, international aid is becoming less available, further limiting the ability of countries to respond effectively. Reduced funding and competing global priorities are constraining humanitarian efforts, weakening the overall aid response (پاسخ کمکرسانی) [pāsokh-e komak-rasāni]. This creates a gap between needs and available support.
The situation illustrates how interconnected global economies are and how conflicts in one region can have widespread consequences. Rising costs, declining incomes, and limited support systems are combining to create a complex crisis. The long-term impact will depend on how quickly stability can be restored and whether effective measures are taken to address the growing risk of poverty.
